The Avenue Fish Bar is a straightforward, no-frills takeaway spot specializing in traditional fish and chips, tucked away on The Avenue in Leeds. It caters mostly to locals looking for a quick, satisfying meal rather than a sit-down experience. The vibe is that of a classic British chippie — familiar and practical, with a focus on fresh, made-to-order fried foods like haddock, scampi, battered sausage, and more.

This place shines for those who appreciate well-executed fish and chips without fuss. The batter tends to be crisp and flavorful, and portions come generous, which appeals to families, workers on a lunch break, or anyone craving that quintessential seaside-style takeaway meal inland. The condiments lineup is simple but covers all the essentials — tartare sauce, vinegar, ketchup, and salt — allowing you to dial in your perfect chip dip.

Staff here carry a reputation for being friendly and accommodating, making it a steady favorite among regulars. While the pricing might feel a bit above some chippies, it’s clear from the customer chatter that the quality and care in food preparation justify the cost. The fish bar recently added card payments, smoothing the takeaway process for those who don’t carry cash.

One thing to note is the opening hours — they seem a bit limited or irregular, which means it’s worth checking ahead if you’re planning a visit. This can be a minor inconvenience, especially for those who want a spontaneous fish and chips fix. But when open, the pace of service and freshness stand out.

Overall, The Avenue Fish Bar fits well within its neighborhood as a dependable spot for a proper fish and chips takeaway. It’s best visited when hunger strikes during typical meal times, especially if you’re local or passing through the LS17 area. Those with gluten intolerance (but not full coeliac disease, as the fryer isn’t separate) can also find a suitable option here, catering to a wider range of dietary needs than many similar spots.

Best fish and chips in the area. We have tried a few since moving to Alwoodley and this one is by far our favourite. Tasty fish and batter.

Lovely gluten free fish and chips. It’s not in a separate fryer so not suitable for coeliacs but fine for me as im just gluten intolerant.

I really love this place, been going here for years, staff is always friendly and the food quality is really good. Prices can be a bit steep but considering it’s a small business I’m happy to pay. They’ve recently started taking card as well which is a lot more convenient. However there opening times are a bit strange and can be annoying as they aren’t open a lot and I’m having to constantly check when they are. Aside from that the service is really good and I quite enjoy the food

Moved to alwoodley over a year ago but still used to drive to street lane for my fish and chips. Tonight I couldn't be arsed so gave this place a try. Won't be schlepping to street lane any more. The food was delicious and two lots of fish and chips and a fish was only £15. Really impressed. Give it a try if you haven't already.
